Born on Jan. 12, 1955 in Biloxi Mississippi.
Education: 1972 graduate of Wareham (Mass.) High School. Attended the United States Military Academy at West Point; 1978 Summa Cum Laude graduate University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a BA in Journalism & English.
License: USCG 50-ton Master
Newspaper career: Began as a reporter for the Westfield (Mass.) Evening News in1977. Worked at the Union Leader of Manchester, NH, beginning in 1979 through 1997, serving as editor of the company’s statewide Sunday newspaper, New Hampshire Sunday News, for the last 8 years of tenure. From 1998 to 2000, launched and edited a Sunday newspaper for the regional newspaper group of the George Foster Company in Dover, N.H., which was called Foster’s Sunday Citizen.
Marine journalism career: During travels to the Caribbean aboard 30-foot sailboat Hong Kong Maiden wrote a regular adventure-travel column for Foster’s Sunday Citizen. During 2000-01, served as senior editor at Yachting magazine. During 2001-2002, served as editor at PassageMaker, a magazine for cruising under power. From 2002 to present, regular freelance contributor to Yachting magazine and other marine magazines. Additionally publishes the monthly Trawler Times e-newsletter and, doing business as Rio Communications and its www.cubacruising.net online magazine.
